The newest season of “Darkness,” the marquee true crime podcast from The Drag Audio Production House, is a six-episode narrative series chronicling the decades-long fight for justice for Irene Garza.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Drag Audio Production House announces the release of Season five of Darkness: The Murder of Irene Garza. This six-episode series explores the 1960 murder of Irene Garza, a young school teacher from McAllen, Texas, and the decades-long battle to hold her killer accountable.

The podcast covers the investigation of Irene’s case, systemic failures within the justice system and the Catholic Church’s role in concealing abuse. It also highlights the courage of Irene’s family, law enforcement and survivors of abuse who fought for justice. Through firsthand accounts from investigators and Irene’s loved ones, listeners gain an in-depth perspective on this impactful story.

Hosted by Talisa Treviño, a journalism student at the University of Texas who dedicated two years to researching and conducting interviews for this series, The Murder of Irene Garza covers the resilience of those who fought for justice while examining the complex intersection of faith, power and accountability.

“This story has taught me so much about myself, where I come from, and, most importantly, about a young woman I never met but am incredibly grateful to have known through others’ heartfelt stories—Irene,” said Talisa Treviño. “I hope everyone who listens feels this connection to Irene like I did and sees what a kind, beautiful, and amazing person she was.”

As with all productions by The Drag Audio, this series was entirely created by students at the University of Texas—from producing and researching to graphic design and marketing.

“Working on this series has shown me just how much impact one person can have on their community and how much good a community is capable of even when faced with so many struggles,” said Sara Kinney, executive producer and former host of Darkness. “Throughout the entire series, who Irene is really shines through. You can hear the impact she’s left on so many people who knew her and even more who didn’t. Her story starts as one of tragedy but  over time becomes one of hope as more and more people become dedicated to finding justice for her.”

Irene Garza’s murder is more than just a decades-old case, it’s a story of  systemic failures that persist today and of those in power choosing protection over justice. This season makes sure that stories like Irene’s are never forgotten. Student journalists have the power to tell stories that challenge institutions, demand accountability and make a lasting impact, which drives home The Drag’s mission – To give students a platform to tell stories like this one.

“I’ve seen three seasons of Darkness come to life during my time at The Drag, and now, with my fourth, I’m just as proud,” said Sofia Vargas Karam, Operations Manager. “Every season, I see my fellow students bring a new perspective to these stories, finding thoughtful and powerful ways to tell them.”

The first episode of The Murder of Irene Garza is out today, with new episodes launching weekly. The trailer is available now on all listening platforms. Follow The Drag on Instagram, X, and Facebook for updates or visit The Drag Audio.
